This Is Your Life!

That is what I'm going to name this quilt because it feels like a trip down memory lane of EVVVVERYTHING I've ever sewn before!  I made it with 99% scraps and/or fabric that I already had in my stash, with no attention whatsoever as to color, patterns, or style.  Nearly everything is leftover from other previous projects and thrown together willy nilly.  That also made it extremely INexpensive to make!

The only things I had to purchase were:

  • Thread.  I think it was 7 or 8 spools.  Soooo much thread!!!!!
  • Batting for the middle
  • A small amount of white for the stripes you see on the front, only because I ran out of stash.
  • The small section of grey polka dots you see on the back, because I really wanted to use it, and the piece I owned wasn't quite long enough.  So I broke down and bought a pinch more!

Not too shabby right???  The cheapskate in me is so proud of doing a nearly-free quilt!  Not to mention using up all these scraps... it really made a dent in the gobs and gobs of fabric I've got lying around, even the very little pieces.  I will definitely be doing something like this again.  Someday.

Having said that, this was the MOST labor-intensive quilt I have attempted so far in my life.  It was slow going, which is usually something I avoid on purpose!  If my sewing machine had an odometer on it that counted up the miles, I believe I have sewn my way to China and back!

At first I hated the way it was so mismatched and clashing.  It felt just awful.  Then when I could lay the squares out and see the overall diamond design coming together, I began to get excited.  Now that it's done I just LOVE how it's bright, colorful, and happy!

I pushed myself to do some straight line quilting (which I normally don't enjoy) using the white strips as guidelines.  There are parallel lines of zig zags and diamonds of all different size and patterns running here and there.  (It might be easiest to see in the picture of the gray backside... although I'm glad they mostly just disappear.  I didn't want anything that competed too much with that crazy kaleidoscope of a front side.)

And lastly, the binding is a solid bright blue, almost turquoise.  I LOVE the extra punch it gives the whole thing.  The finished size is 60"x74".

That's my dream quilt. I'm not even kidding. Plus, I'm pretty sure that white w/ gray polka dots is the opposite (as in the same gray with white polka dots) of what my sister used on Clara's. This is amazing.

Nice work. I have made one of these in a very small version for a table topper. Great scrap buster. I need to do another one bigger.
