Mitch's Ecology Project

Quick bragging session for my 7th grader.  For his science class, he had to create a project that benefited the environment in some way.  The teacher's suggestions were picking up trash, planting a garden, setting up a recycling bin in your house, etc.

Mitchell came up with his own idea to sew reusable grocery bags.  I thought that was pretty smart, but I was also thrilled to have the chance to teach one of my kids to sew (a first!)  I measured and created the pattern, then I stood by and gave him instructions, but he did 100% all of the work.  We had so much fun together, and they turned out really great.

This was his "before" picture.  He had to show a before/after for its impact on the environment.
"Ohhhh, the groceries are so heavy in these flimsy bags!"

Shopping for the fabric

Some intense pattern cutting

First time using the machine!

A little ironing for the top hem and handles

It was also his idea to stencil the recycle symbol on the front of the bags.

And here's the "after" picture.

Aren't they wonderful?!

That's awesome! I couldn't even sew 100% of the project you helped me with. :)
