Remembering...

One year ago today, my mom "dropped dead" (as she likes to put it.)

She had some stomach pains, went to the bathroom, and quite a while later my Dad went to check on her. He found her unconscious on the bathroom floor and her face and lips were blue/gray - we still have no idea why, but she was not breathing.

Getting that phone call, rushing to the ER, and spending the night there were the most horrible moments of my life. Have you ever screamed a prayer?

Mom spent the next several days in the ICU sedated on a ventilator. It was so strange to see her laying there lifeless. Quite traumatized by the whole experience of finding her, attempting CPR and calling 911, my dad was still a wreck himself. We waited, not knowing if she would ever be able to wake up, or if she did, what condition the oxygen deprivation would leave her in. Christmas seemed to be on hold that year.

Luckily, she was able to come off sedation, off the ventilator, and eventually home from the hospital. Over the next few months, Mom was treated for a food-borne virus (possibly picked up at a restaurant that day???) but that still doesn't explain why her lungs would suddenly stop. We are very lucky to have her here today, one year later.

I love you Mom!!!!!

This is me and my mom

What a scary experience. I'm so glad she's okay. And you can totally see the resemblance between the two of you in that first pic! WOW!

I can't imagine, but I am very glad the story has a happy ending. If I didn't know your age and the general decade you were married in, I could have easily mistaken your mom for you in her wedding photo.

I had honestly forgotten about that (sorry), but reading about it again brought me to tears. I remember praying so hard for your mom and your family that day and for the next few days. I'm so glad she's alive and very well.

*hugs*

I love, love, love the black and white picture of you both. So sentimental. I'm glad she's okay now. . . I remember you talking about that last year. Its so hard to deal with those things but particularly around the holidays. Sure gives us the right perspective though.

I ditto Julie, that black and white picture is absolutely priceless.

What a scary thing to have happen. I love your mom, she's the greatest. I'm glad everything ended up okay, but how frustrating to not know exactly what happened.
