Archaeology

About a week ago, I made the BEST dollar-store purchase, EVER!!!

Can you believe these were only a BUCK?!?! For each "fossil kit," you get one egg/rock thing, a picking/digging tool, and a little brush. Buried inside each rock are little bones. Once you have them all dug out, you pop them together into little dinosaur skeletons! What more could a little boy want? What more could a mother ask for on a hot summer day?

So we started out digging! They were a chalky consistency, but just a little tougher to get through maybe than sidewalk chalk. I wouldn't recommend this for less-than-school-aged kiddos. It took some patience, especially in the beginning.

I gave each boy a plastic tray, hopefully to contain the worst of the "dirt." That ended up being a good idea, although this was REALLY easy to wipe and sweep right up.

The kids were seriously RIVETED! They worked and worked for a total of about 1.5 hours! They LOVED IT. It was especially fun after a while when little boys started calling out, "I found a bone!" or "I found the head!" It was so exciting!

This was the first bone uncovered. Yes, they are TINY! Mitchell really wanted to blog about it, too, so we made a deal. I would blog the introduction, and he would get to post the pictures of the finished dinosaurs. Sooo.... if you want to see how they turned out.... you'll have to visit Mitchell's blog.

AND, I think I will be going back to buy about 25 more of these babies. So if you're interested, give me a shout!

Looks like a great time! They sat still for over an hour?!?! Sounds like the best $2 you've ever spent. :)
