It's ALL About the Food

And now for my weekend recap! This weekend we had so many things. First, my brother-in-law Ryan Gosling, er, Gary came to stay with us. His wife was out of town, so he took the chance to get in some good brother-bonding! He also brought his two cute dogs, and I think our Reese was extremely happy for the companionship. I joked that they were playing "Three's Company" in the backyard. One guy living it up with 2 girl roommates...

Where's Mr. Roper?

So starting with Friday... This was our night for the babysitting group. There are 4 families involved, and it was our turn to have all 10 kids at our house for 4 hours. Woo fun! Knowing that I had this big night coming up, I made some little treats for the kiddos ahead of time.

The world's best sugar cookies!

This was taken before baking; they later got some frosting. Since I had some leftover frosting, I also made a bunch of graham cracker/frosting sandwiches and froze them for later snacking. One last Friday treat (I know, it's already getting out of hand): I also made a tray of the pretzels with a melted Hershey Hug on top, with Halloween-colored M&M's to top them off! Sorry, no picture.

We had an uneventful night, everyone did great. Someone even came by to look at the couches, and we sold them right in the middle of all that. (YESSSSS!)

Saturday morning while watching conference... I made a batch of French Bread. It was cooled and ready in time to slice and make sandwiches on for lunch! Ohhhh were they good. Side note: if you have not yet tried this recipe, hurry up!

By the time evening came, Jason and Gary left for the Priesthood session, and the kids and I got pretty bored. This weekend gave us some suddenly beautiful weather, so we went outside and rode bikes for a bit. We even got sprinkled on a little, but we enjoyed every minute of it.

Super exciting picture, I know.

Wake-up Sunday morning... now we're back in business! For this morning, I had something special planned. I actually had to start it the day before, but it did not disappoint. From THIS cool blog I found a recipe for Sourdough Waffles. They had a slightly unique taste from regular waffles, which we delightfully devoured with fresh strawberries on top.

This is everyone on the attack...

Closer-up waffle shot. Tucker "trying" to smile. Do you like my spider web tablecloth? It glows in the dark!

The Conference Packets working their magic...

Side note again: These packets (to keep kids busy and paying attention during conference) are such a hit. They have spread like wildfire. You've probably already seen them. I happen to think it's pretty cool that they originated right here in my ward by the fabulous Miss Genny. She probably didn't even get to watch much conference this year cuz she was apparently a little busy.... shoving out a baby. *Congrats!!!*

After Sunday Conference we went to my parent's house for some amazing dinner. Amazing because my mom wasn't necessarily planning on having everyone over, but I think we/I put the pressure on her, and she scrounged something up last minute. Something = a turkey and mashed potatoes!!! Wow, thanks mom, it was good. To apologize for pressuring her, I offered to bring spudnuts. (These are a donut recipe made with potatoes -??- which Jason and I have been DYING to try.) I spent the 2nd session getting the dough ready, and we brought them over to fry.

Choose your topping...

They were pretty darn good! I'm not sure if I would say it's worth it for ALL the work it takes to make homemade donuts (the fancy kind, not the refrigerator biscuit kind), but they were very good.

While at Grandma and Grandpa's house, Mitchell learned to play checkers. That's only AFTER we had to look it up online because no one in the house could remember how to play checkers!?!? So I guess you could say a few of us learned how...

Now... it's all over. I think my baking sheets and electric mixer bowl have been messed up and cleaned up and messed up all over again about a dozen times. I think I have stood on my feet the equivalent of 2 days straight. But I enjoyed it, I'm not really complaining. I don't know why I'm so restless on a fun weekend like this. Maybe all the baking and keeping my hands busy helps me listen to the talks better. Maybe it's just because we had a guest staying with us. Whatever it is, I'd better have gained a few pounds!!!

You're awesome!! So, for the pretzel chocolate thing - all you need are pretzels, the hug and an m&m? Then what? Melt them in the oven? Carena's been begging for these!

What an eventful weekend. I've never heard of a babysitting group, but it sounds like a mighty fine idea! And I might just have to try your French bread recipe although the one I use now is pretty darn good.

I think I gained a few pounds just reading that! ;) Sounds like an awesome weekend. And I second that bread - even though it tastes like regular bread not French bread. It is SUPER yummy and fast and easy. I love it. I just made it tonight in fact.

Potato donuts? What?

So glad you're loving that bread! We use it for everything around here (sandwiches, etc.) -- I make at least 2 loaves a week now... more if we have garlic bread with spaghetti for dinner or french toast for breakfast! It's also really good lightly toasted with butter/cinnamon sugar! :-)

Why do all the good things/times in life center around food? I love it! I'll need to try the french bread recipe. I'm getting so many food ideas from blogging. I've got to figure out a way to keep it all straight!
