Here is the oh-so-fancy pattern I drew -- out of paper towels and a highlighter. You see, I'm a highly technical sewer. Yes indeed.

I actually used a t-shirt of my 2 year old son's to trace
the curve and size of the neck hole, the arm holes,
and get a general idea for length.
Then I used the instructions from THIS TUTORIAL for the basic construction. Highly valuable, but I made a few changes. (I think my changes made for some VERY cute improvements, but let me stress, the tutorial was still extremely helpful.)
Here's what I did different than what you'll see in the above link: Instead of inserting ribbons to tie bows over each shoulder, I just extended the actual dress fabric into a long "finger" shape and tied those together in a knot instead. I also left the bottom of the dress completely open. Then I made my own ruffle by sewing 3 of those rectangles (seen above in the pattern pieces) together end-to-end into a big hoop. Then fold the hoop in half so that both raw edges are together. (Now it's still a hoop, just a skinnier one.) Then gather it, match it up to the bottom of the dress, and attach it to the dress. WOW -- so easy.

This dress seriously cost me $5.00 and 3 hours to make! And what a cutie pie!

Wow!!! You made your own pattern! You make me wish for more time to sew, but I already have about 6 project on the docket. I bow down to you, oh wise seamstress!!!
My daughters' measurements are on their way, I want the exact same thing! j/k. But that's totally awesome!
Fun fun fun! I need to get my butt into gear and start sewing some cute girly things with the tons of fabric I have stashed away. But also there is another CSI marathon on today so...maybe later?
I think you need to teach me how to sew. I really, really, really want to make some clothes for Clara. So cute!
You may poke fun at yourself by saying you're a "highly technical sewer" but you really do have some serious skills. Good job. And really where do you find the time to sew??
Yup, you've got mad skillz. I can't sew. I mean I can, but stuff doesn't turn out so stinkin' adorable!
Wow that's awesome!!! Maybe Project Runway next???
Cute! What a lucky little 2 year old to have such a talented and nice Aunt!!
