Dirt Under My Nails

Our front yard has been looking like burnt toast lately. OK for a long time now.

For the five + years that we've lived here, I had these lovely mauve-colored roses that beautifully framed the front windows out there. They were so unique, a different species that I've never seen before and probably never will again. They bloomed quite abundantly most of the time. I loved them! I guess this summer was extra hard on them.... or maybe I was neglecting their upkeep more than normal. Either way, they finally died for good.

I do not have a "BEFORE" picture, but let's just say it looked pretty close to this:
Yep, that looks about right.

This morning Jason and I made it our #1 Saturday chore to get the front yard fixed up just a bit. I picked out new rosebushes (this time they are the regular ol' variety - and yellow!) I also replanted the tiny flowerbed next to our front walk. It took some mighty digging (on Jason's part) to get out the old and make a hole for the new, then I planted the new stuff and smoothed it all out again.

In the end, it probably wasn't a huge amount of work at all, but when you factor in that it was 108 degrees and FREAKISHLY humid today -- then YOWZA!!! We were exhausted and soooo sweaty.

Here are the fruits of our labor. They look so minuscule since they're new and not established. But here's to hoping that they don't fry up in the next few days and live to grow huge and beautiful!!!

Doesn't it feel so good to have a nice yard to look at? You would think that would motivate me to take better care of my yard, but it doesn't. It's soo hard just to take care of the inside of a house, but the outside too?

Good luck with your new roses.

I didn't check your blog for a while and now I am way behind! Awesome birthday party and I can't believe that grown up boy is Mitchell!!! Love the new roses, we have yellow roses and they are so cheerful and lovely to have in a yard. Be careful with your eyeballs! You've only got two. Why are you already in school - we start September 9th!!!!

Ah, so pretty! You get extra kudos for doing that in the middle of August! :)

They will be so worth it when they get bigger. No one really knows how much love and effort really goes into planting something like that in August in AZ unless they've done it. It's a lot of work! Our yard looks like burnt toast too. I'm so tired of caring now though. I've lost all my pride I guess. BTW, your hair looked so nice in church today. I love curly hair, but your hair looks so nice straight too!

Impressive. . . I can't believe you did yard work in August. I give myself July and August OFF--who cares about my HOA! But I LOVE flowers and they color they add to a yard. It will look great as they grow and bloom. Way to go!

Amy! I am so happy I found your blog through "Make It and Love It"!
Your family is growing up. It is crazy to see what a little man Mitchell is! You have a beautiful family or should I say handsome so as to not offend the boys!

Amy,
Thanks for your comment! It was so nice to hear from you!
I have been in touch with Krista recently and mentioned that my sister-in-law just moved out that way. I would love to come and see you guys sometime when we are out there!
Shoot me over an email at danarburnett@yahoo.com when you get the chance and we can exchange contact info! (if your phone number is still the same, I do have an old ward list I can resort to!)
Btw, I would love the coupons! I'm sure that would be a great help. Just tell me WHY formula is so expensive!!! It is worth it for a happy baby, though!
