NYC - Day 2

Day two started out super early. Lindsey and I were the only people interested in going down to the Today Show plaza, so we set an alarm and headed out. Turned out to be a grand disappointment...

Here we are a football field away from all the action. No Doubt was there in concert that day, so it was CROWDED! (That black drape you see behind us is the backside of the stage.) So it was not worth sticking around there very long.

We soothed our sorrows by living it up in the NBC Experience store. This is where you can buy miscellaneous junk related to all your favorite TV shows. Woo hoo! It makes for perfect souvenir shopping for the husbands :)

Can't go to Rockefeller Center without a picture of the golden dude that sits over the ice rink!

And we ran into a flock of sailors while we were there. See, it wasn't a total loss!

Lindsey and I then went back to our room for a quick nap. Necessary! By this time the rest of our group had left to tour the Statue of Liberty. Myself and my in-laws opted for a quicker, cheaper route by taking the Staten Island Ferry. This goes right by the statue for good pictures, but no tour, less time commitment, and best of all it's FREE!!!

Here I am about to set sail.

Lady Liberty herself.

I have other pictures closer up, but I liked this one the best showing the water and surroundings. The statue is MUCH smaller than I always imagined as a kid. Especially compared to all those skyscrapers. It's still big, just not a dominating presence on the skyline.

So we rode to Staten Island, then hopped right back on and rode back. PERFECT. The ride home it was pouring rain, however, we were nicely covered. That's when I got my nifty picture making the heart with my hands (see 2 posts ago.) And as we left the station, I met the most beautiful explosive-sniffing dog!!!

He was so sweet, and I'm always impressed at how well trained they are!

After returning from our separate adventures, the whole group got jazzed up for our big night. Ohhhh the excitement in the air! We were going to WICKED on Broadway!!! And the theatre was about 100 ft. from our hotel. Sweet. (Did I mention it was raining and we were now in heels?) We had a lovely Italian dinner together with good food and a grumpy waiter.

Me, Mom, and Kim

The ONLY picture I have of all 9 of us together.

At the theatre!

Now let me just TRY to explain how phenomenal this musical was: .......... nope. Can't.

Let's just say, by the time the intermission came I was ALREADY heart-pounding, tears in my eyes, bursting into applause, roaring with laughter. It was only half over!!! We paid some good money for these tickets, and BOY, it was worth every penny and beyond. The talent of the actors blew me away. My favorite was the voice of Elphaba (if you've never seen it, she's the green witch from the Wizard of Oz.)

The stars were perfectly aligned for us this night -- just as we were leaving, we noticed a small handful of people waiting off to the side by a non-descript door. Sure enough, about 15 seconds after we stand there, the LEADS FROM THE SHOW start coming out to sign autographs!!! It was not a mad rush or huge crowd, so we got to chat with them casually and take pictures. It was amazing to watch them trot away in their street clothes like nothing special. If I had passed them 1/2 a block away, I would never have noticed. Can you imagine? You sing your heart out on that huge stage in front of thousands of people in a world-famous production, then you just... throw on a cute little hat and ride the subway home? Crazy.

Here's us with Elphaba (in the hat.)

and this gal played Glinda (also in the hat.)

And lastly, this was Fiyero. Meow.

Goodnight for Day 2!

You and Elphaba have an extremely similar look. Funny!
So, aparently there was a black and white memo for the attire of the evening at Wicked.
I'm so jealous that you all got to see it, and enjoy NY on top of that.
I did see Wicked almost 2 years ago in LA, it was awesome!! And I really didn't even know the story line when I went to see it either.

Welcome home! I'm so glad to see and read that you had a wonderful trip (like it would be possible to NOT have a fabulous time in good ol' NYC when you're with a bunch of great gals!) I would say the icing on the cake was getting to see Wicked on Broadway, no? : )

Did you know Wicked is coming to AZ this summer? We are getting tickets. We've been looking and I have no idea why we haven't purchased them. I think we are waiting for free tickets to fall from the sky. I'm sure its not as good as NYC but you've convinced me to suck up the money and go!!!!
