The Polar Ice Cave from H***

My bedroom is the coldest room in the house. We have yet to figure this out, since it's the farthest from in the intake vent. When you walk in, there's a VERY noticable, at least 5 degree difference between it and the hallway, just one step away. I'm pretty sure that is why the majority of our food storage is in our master closet. It could double as a meat locker. In the summer this is a very pleasant situation. I can sleep comfortable at night, go in there to do projects during the day, and it's soooo nice. In winter, however, one does not normally want their bedroom to collect frost. Couple this with the fact that I shower at night before bed and sleep with wet hair. Brrrrrr!!!!!! Many a nights I will wrap a blanket over my head and shiver myself to sleep.

Having said all that, I will NEVER, NEVER complain about the temperature in my bedroom again.

This weekend I was able to attend an overnighter for the 4th years (my new calling for girl's camp later this summer - yipee!) For some reason, we weren't told very much information leading up to the trip. Just that food would be provided (so we only needed to pack our personal items) and prepare to sleep on concrete (so bring some padding.) I was never really comfortable with this lack of details... where exactly are we going? What will the weather be like? How "rough" or "cushy" of camping will it be? Will we be camping at all, or in a cabin? I had no idea what to do. Well, it's only one night. I'll just over-prepare a little, and everything will be fine. Right?

So I borrowed a cot to at least get me off of that evil concrete, and I packed 2 blankets plus my heavy-duty sleeping bag. If I didn't need them on top of me, at least they would be more padding UNDER. I only packed a hoodie jacket, very lightweight, but I threw in a sweatshirt that I could layer under that if it were really cold. A few snacks, cuz you know Amy doesn't go anywhere without a little food of her own.... and we were off!

WELL.... after getting lost on the way there (given NO phone numbers of who to call to get some help) we finally pulled in just as the sun was setting. We were at a pretty decent elevation way out in the national forest. My, my, it's pretty chilly out here! Dinner and the evening program get started. Gee, we'd better run back to our stuff and grab our jackets. Nope, jackets are NOT enough, we'd better grab ALL OF OUR BEDDING, wrap it around us, and drag it back uphill to the campfire! A flashlight would have been nice for all this back-and-forth through the darkness. Nope, of course we didn't have one. I quickly learn that one of my girls has no jacket at all, only the short sleeved shirt she came in. So I give her my back-up sweatshirt. Another girl has no blanket, only a thin ratty sleeping bag to use on that concrete floor. So there goes my 2nd blanket. By the time it was "lights out" we climbed in and tried to make the best of it. I was seriously wearing everying I could. I mummied the sleeping bag completely around me, with my blanket completely over my face. Still our feet ached from the cold, and we shook all night. They had us all sleep in some sort of a basketball court covered in a big tin shed. So it was "indoors," but not sealed and insulated, so it was the exact same temperature as the "outdoors." Plus it echoed like a gymnasium. So imagine 30+ teenage girls refusing to go to sleep, yelling and screaming all night. It was like trying to sleep in a freezer in the middle of a pep rally. OH THE MISERY! Needless to say, I did not sleep one single minute.

This is the Polar Ice Cave, my personal torture.

OH BOY! Can't wait for the REAL camp in 4 more months!!!!!!!! :D

At least it will be summer, I know where it is and what to pack. Whew.

Cool! We'll have to compare notes after camp...I was recently called as our YW camp director, too! Sorry the night was so miserable. And we have an icecave of a room in our house too...unfortunately, it's Evie's room, so she gets like 4 blankets and always has socks on under her footie-jammies.

You will get no sleep at camp and if you do beware!! They got a picture of Sis Williams and I sleeping. It is a lovely one! It is so much fun though!

Maybe your bedroom is haunted - I hear that ghosts can cause drops in temperature.

And that camp experience . . . that's just miserable.

That does not sound like a fun trip at all!!! And I think I'd have a small issue with not being given any info beforehand either.
Glad you made it back o.k., even though your whole family is now sick with the BIG D and whatnot!!
I hope you feel better really soon!

Okay, I know that wasn't supposed to be funny, but the part about all the girls in that echo-y gym just cracked me up. It brought me back to my YW leader days. Seriously good memories! Sorry about the cold though. I HATE sleeping (or not being able to sleep, which is usually the case) in the cold!

Wasn't it at the Bowers' place? I don't do well in those situations--that's why I live in AZ, so I don't have to freeze. Plus, you need to give those girls some preparedness lectures!!!
