Weekend Retreat

This weekend we were lucky enough to be invited to stay with some friends at their family's cabin. Score!!! So we made a hasty getaway to the north. It is nicely nestled in the mountains, complete with ideal weather and scenery. Not to mention, the cabin is GORGEOUS!

This is the view as you approach from the front...

and the rear. (Aren't wrap-around porches the BEST?)

Rewind. This was our first official road-trip with all 3 kids. Granted, it was a short one. They did excellent! We made 2 great decisions: first, Mitchell got to take his booster and sit up front with the air bag turned off. We decided that the car-sickness benefits would outweigh the other recommendations against this. It worked perfectly, no barfing. I was in the middle across from the baby. I actually enjoyed being able to reach everything and everyone with ease. Second great decison: Tucker was in the way-back with a stack of paper, pencil, and an Avon box lid, and we never heard from him again. This has turned out to be my favorite trick. The Avon box lid is literally that, the lid to an Avon box! It is the perfect size and shape for a car/travel tray. See picture below. He can color and draw to his heart's content, it's a nice flat surface, it's not too tall for his arms to comfortably rest inside, but the pencils or markers never roll away and get lost in the car. Same with small action figures that he likes to play with. Later when a kid wants a snack, I just toss it in the box and they eat with all the crumbs nicely contained. It's pure genius. And by the way, I have a zillion of these and they keep coming on a regular basis, so if you ever want a good sturdy box (or their handy-dandy-multi-function LIDS) just holler!

So back to the trip, here's the upstairs bedroom Jason and I slept in, with it's HUGE wall o' windows that I enjoyed gazing out of very much.

It was so nice to just enjoy the outdoors!

Of course Jason enjoyed the indoors a little, too.

This nap lasted about 3 hours. He deserved it.

We had another trip to this cabin 2 years ago. I had the cutest picture of our boys together in front of the fireplace back then, so I thought it would be nice to re-create it.

August 2008 -- Woops, I lined them up in the wrong order.

The dads and boys took a little walk to the nearby creek and played around a bit.

This is a fun game, too!

Since Genny was nice enough to provide 3 great meals for us,

I tried to help out with the clean-up now and then.

And right before we left to go home, our feasting culminated with

the amazing BATMAN BROWNIES!

Thank you again, Kimball and Genny, for our fantastic time!

What a fun getaway! I'm totally going to steal your ideas for 1) the box lid for car trips (pure genius!) and 2) Batman Brownies. Too fun!
