We have an ever-increasing problem lately with getting Tucker to eat his dinner. He is
not a picky eater. He simply plays and talks, gets distracted and doesn't get down to business. It usually does not happen for breakfast or lunch - just dinner. It takes him a ridiculous amount of time to finish and usually takes us standing right over him practically forcing the last few bites down. Lots of tension at dinner time which I am not growing so fond of. So last night we tried a new idea! I bought him one of these kitchen timers....

.... that would be special just for him. I decided not to use the digital kind (which we already have) so he could
especially see how and when the time was running out. For dinner yesterday we explained how the "game" would work, to finish before the timer buzzed. We turned it to 20 min. and set it right in front of him. That kid had his whole plate empty in 6 minutes flat! He even beat his older brother, which is UNHEARD OF in this house. YES!!!

Sooooo like Shaun... not picky at all, just completely uninterested in eating dinner at all! It took Shaun 7-8 years to outgrow that nasty habit, despite every trick I could think of... and still there are rare nights where dinnertime is an HOURS-long affair for the kid! Ryan has begun to do the same, and it drives us crazy! :-)
Kudos!! I'm impressed that your little scheme worked the first time!
My child is reverting back to if you don't feed me I won't eat phase lately. It's so annoying to have to spoon feed your almost 3 yr. old if you want her to eat anything!!
that is hilarious. but really amy, can you blame him for being such a chatter? :)
Amy,
You are such a good mommy! Way to go. It is hard to believe mine are getting so much older... I don't remember those days too much. But then remember my middle name is "Dory" and my motto to "Happiness is good health and a bad memory".. I am going to be the happiest old woman I know.

Thats a great idea. We have the same problem with Maddie--she'll walk around the kitchen, go under her chair, check out everyone else's plate, etc. I'm liking the timer idea. . .
That's a great idea. I'm going to have to try it for both of my girls - they are extremely pokey eaters. I think they actually work off most of their food while they are eating it, because they have to wander the whole house during every meal. Hopefully Target has enough timers for everybody to buy one after we all read your blog!
SO FUNNY! I love that little guy!

I love it, that is genius! We have the same problem with dinner not going as smooth as the other meals. Hopefully as Camden get a little older, we can too play this game!
